A biologist studies living organisms and life processes. The tropics has the earth's most varied life forms. More than half of all living species of animals and plants live in the tropics (which is six percent of the land mass). Biologists are concerned about the long term survival of this diversity.
Plants and animals are not uniformly distributed through the forest; because of competition, climatic conditions and interrelationships among the animals. With the limited range for many plants and animals, rare and unknown species are continually encountered. No more than one-sixth of all tropical species are known to science. When forests are cleared, populations such as tigers and anteaters, will find it impossible to survive in the isolated patches of forest. At the present rate of the forest destruction, several plants and animals are going extinct each day. The great majority of life-forms have never been identified.
